Inventing God's Law: How the Covenant Code of the Bible Used and Revised the Laws of Hammurabi

David Wright

Most scholars believe that        numerous similarities between        Covenant Code (Exodus 20:23-23:19)         Mesopotamian law collections, especially        Laws       Hammurabi, which date       around 1750 BCE,        due       oral tradition that extended from        second to        first millennium. This book offers      fundamentally new understanding of        Covenant Code, arguing that it depends directly         primarily upon        Laws       Hammurabi         that        use       this source text occurred during        Neo-Assyrian period, sometime between 740-640 BCE, when Mesopotamia exerted strong         continuous political         cultural influence over        kingdoms       Israel         Judah and      time when        Laws       Hammurabi were actively copied      Mesopotamia as      literary-canonical text. The study offers significant new evidence demonstrating that      model       literary dependence is        only viable explanation for        work. It further examines        compositional logic used      transforming        source text       produce        Covenant Code, thus providing      commentary to        biblical composition from        new        oretical perspective. This analysis shows that        Covenant Code      primarily      creative academic work rather than      repository       laws practiced by Israelites or Judeans over        course of        ir history. The Covenant Code, too,      an ideological work, which transformed      paradigmatic         prestigious legal text       Israel's         Judah's imperial overlords into      statement symbolically countering foreign hegemony. The study goes further       study        relationship of        Covenant Code to        narrative of        book       Exodus         explores how this may relate to        development of        Pentateuch as      whole.
